Balwant Singh Rajaona, serving death sentence for assassination of former Punjab CM Beant Singh, granted Parole by P&H HC to attend his father’s last rites

Chandigarh, February 1, 2022: In response to a Writ Petition, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted parole to Balwant Singh Rajaona, a former Punjab police constable serving death sentence for the assassination of Beant Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, in order to attend the last rites of his father.
The Division Bench of Justice Ajay Tewari and Justice Pankaj Jain stated while granting parole, “In these circumstances, the petition stands disposed of with a direction to the authorities to allow the petitioner to attend the Bhog ceremony of his father with adequate police escort on 31.1.2022 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.”
The Court was dealing with a writ petition for issuance of directions to the respondents to grant parole to the petitioner to attend the last rites of his father who died on January 22, 2022.
The State Counsel, on instructions from Police, corroborated the fact that the father of the petitioner passed away and the “Bhog” ceremony was to be held on January 31, 2022.
The Counsel for the petitioner stated that keeping in view the nature of the case, he would not oppose any condition.
Thus, parole was granted.
